Average retirement age rises six years

New figures from the ONS reveal average retirement age for men has risen to 65.

Retirement age is rising as those approaching state pension age struggle to fund their later years, figures have shown.

A report from the Government's Office of National Statistics (ONS) said that the average age at which people retire has risen from 6.38 years to 64.6 years for men and from 61.2 years to 62.3 years for women between 2004 and 2010. The rise is expected to continue as the state pension age moves upward in line with life expectancy.

The figures also show that women will see their life expectancy at retirement age drop dramatically over this decade, from 28 years to 24, because of the rise in their state pension age. In 2008, the latest period for which data is available, men at 65 can be expected to life for a further 9.9 years in good, or very good health, while women could expect to live a further 11.5 years in good or very good health.

The figures indicate that men and women who are retired at age 65 could expect to spend 56 per cent and 57 per cent respectively of their retirement in good health and 58 per cent and 55 per cent respectively of their retirement free from disability.

The figures also showed that larger numbers of people approaching retirement are working part time, with 8.9pc of women of state pension age or over working part time while 3.6pc working full time. For men, 7.3pc over state pension age worked part time with 4.6pc full time.

This article is about the average age people actually retire.

this headline is nonsense. According to the article itself average retirement age has risen by just 1 year not six as in the headline. At least read your own articles!
