BP Whiting refinery's 2nd largest crude unit shut -sources

(Adds BP no comment, background)

HOUSTON, Feb 25 (Reuters) - The second-largest crude distillation unit at BP Plc's 413,500 barrel per day (bpd) Whiting, Indiana refinery was shut on Wednesday morning due to a malfunction, said sources familiar with plant operations.

No time has been set for restarting the 110,000 bpd crude unit, which is undergoing unplanned repairs, the sources said.

Energy industry intelligence service Genscape reported the unit shut down on Wednesday morning.

A BP spokesman declined to discuss operations at the refinery on Wednesday.

The Whiting refinery is one of 12 U.S. refineries where members of the United Steelworkers union are on strike in support of a new national contract. (Reporting by Erwin Seba; Editing by Chris Reese)
