BUZZ-Clariant rises to multi-year high amid takeover rumours

** Clariant (Xetra: 895929 - news) shares rise as much as 5.9 pct on Wednesday with dealers citing rumours of a possible takeover of the Swiss chemicals firm

** Shares (Berlin: DI6.BE - news) later pared gains after hitting highest levels since 2002

** Dealers cite Evonik, Johnson Matthey (LSE: JMAT.L - news) and Dow Chemical as possible buyers of Clariant

** Clariant and Evonik said they do not comment on market rumours. A Johnson Matthey spokesman declined to comment immediately. A representative for Dow Chemical did not immediately respond to a request for comment

** Clariant's chairman said in March the firm is not for sale and its prospects are better if it remains independent
