BUZZ-Spir shares leap on sale of websites to Axel Springer

Reuters - UK Focus

** Shares in Spir Communication (Paris: FR0000131732 - news) , a French newspaper publisher, jumped 23 percent after it announced sale on Friday of a 52 pct stake in its online classified website LaCentrale.fr.

** Germany's Axel Springer (Other OTC: AXELF - news) , which has been expanding its presence in on-line commerce and advertising, will pay 72 million euros ($98.21 million) for the websites.

** Spir, which owns 20 percent of free daily paper 20 Minutes, is also in talks to sell the stake to rival free dailies Metro (Other OTC: MTRAF - news) and Direct Matin, according to Les Echos newspaper.

** Spir posted a 5 percent decline in sales last year to reach 515 million euros, while its losses widened to 55.6 million euros from 5 million a year earlier.
