The world's No.2 oilfield services provider reported a 20 percent rise in quarterly profit as drilling activity increased in the United States and Gulf of Mexico.

The second-largest U.S. toymaker, reported an 8.2 percent increase in quarterly sales, helped by strong demand for its boys' toys such as action figures based on "Transformers" movies and Marvel comics.

Activist investor Elliott Management Corp has taken a $1 billion stake in data storage equipment maker EMC Corp EMC.N and plans to push the company to spin off its VMware Inc (NYSE: VMW - news) unit, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

A Florida jury decided to impose punitive damages of $23.6 billion against RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company on Friday. But the penalty is likely to be rejected on appeal or the award reduced substantially, lawyers with expertise in jury awards said on Sunday.

Russian steel maker Severstal OAO said on Monday that it had agreed to sell its two U.S. steel plants for $2.3 billion, withdrawing from the U.S. market at a time of rising tension between Russia and the West and turning its focus to its domestic business.

Severstal said it would sell subsidiaries Severstal Columbus in Mississippi and Severstal Dearborn in Michigan to Steel Dynamics and AK Steel, respectively, a sale which may allow the steelmaker to pay an extra dividend and reduce debt.

Restaurant companies McDonald's and Yum Brands are facing a new food safety scare in China, denting the fast food giants' efforts to shore up reputations and businesses that were hurt by a 2012 safety scandal in one of their biggest markets.

** ABBVIE INC (NYSE: ABBV - news) , Friday close $54.91, -0.24 pct premarket

The U.S. drugmaker bought Dublin-based Shire Plc (LSE: SHP.L - news) on Friday in a 32 billion pound ($54.7 billion) deal that will allow it to slash its tax bill by relocating to Britain.

** GENERAL MOTORS CO, Friday close $37.41

The car maker, in 2003 and 2004, made changes to redesigned ignition switch parts on four models but did not ensure that older, potentially faulty parts were taken out of circulation, the automaker said in a filing with U.S. safety regulators made public on Friday.

** VERIZON COMMUNICATIONS INC (Xetra: 868402 - news) , Friday close $50.75, -0.10 pct premarket

The telecommunications company is in the market with $11.3 billion in loans that will cut borrowing costs on debt backing the $130 billion takeover of Verizon Wireless from Vodafone Group Plc, the third-biggest acquisition in corporate history, sources told Thomson Reuters LPC.

The online retailer launched on Friday a $9.99-per-month subscription service that lets customers read as much as they choose from its library of more than 600,000 digital books.

** TESCO CORP, Friday close $20.57

Tesco (Xetra: 852647 - news) boss Philip Clarke is to quit after Britain's biggest retailer warned it would miss profit forecasts, bringing an abrupt end to a disastrous three-year reign.

Clarke (Toronto: CKI.TO - news) , who has spent more than 1 billion pounds ($1.7 billion) on a failed turnaround plan, will be replaced on Oct. 1 by Unilever (NYSE: UL - news) executive Dave Lewis, who is credited with revamping a number of businesses at the consumer goods group.

** ABB LTD (NYSE: ABB - news) , Friday close $22.79

Swiss engineering group ABB and Swedish car and bus maker Volvo said they were setting up a global partnership to co-develop and commercialize electric and hybrid buses with fast charging systems.

Philips (Amsterdam: PHIA.AS - news) said on Monday that it expects its core profit to rise in the second half of the year after cost-cutting measures, but said 2014 would still be a challenge.

** LOCKHEED MARTIN CORP, Friday close $162.49

Swedish defense company Saab AB (Other OTC: SAABF - news) has dropped out of a tender to supply Denmark with between 22 and 30 fighter jets because officials expect rival Lockheed Martin to win the competition, Danish daily Politiken reported on Monday.

** MANPOWERGROUP INC (NYSE: MAN - news) , Friday close $83.14

The staffing company is expected to have benefited from a recovery in the eurozone economy. Europe contributed about two-thirds of the company's annual revenue in 2013. Larger competitor Adecco SA, which also gets half its annual revenue from Europe, said in May that the worst was behind Europe's labor market as the region's fragile recovery helped grow its revenues in its first quarter. ManpowerGroup said in April that it expected revenue to grow 4 to 6 percent during the second quarter and earnings per share to grow between $1.26 and $1.34 from 87 cents per share last year. Analysts will be looking for an update on the forecast.
