The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.98 percent at 17,845.35, the S&P 500 was up 0.88 percent at 2,059.43 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.65 percent 4,747.25.

Pfizer said it would buy Hospira for about $15 billion to gain access to boost its portfolio of generic injectible drugs and biosimilars, or copies of biotech drugs.

Shares (Berlin: DI6.BE - news) of Britain's second-biggest drugmaker, AstraZeneca , broke through the day's low after Pfizer's approach for Hospira. Traders say tie-up ends speculation Pfizer could seek to acquire AstraZeneca. The company earlier reported weak fourth-quarter earnings.

The molecular diagnostic company, which was issued a warning by Nasdaq for breaching minimum price requirement for listing, said it had solved the issue.
