The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.66 percent at 17,958.29, the S&P 500 was up 0.59 percent at 2,097.86 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 0.76 percent at 4,978.735.

The business networking website operator slashed its full-year profit forecast, citing slower revenue growth at its hiring business and a delay in recognizing the contribution of lynda.com, the online education company it has agreed to buy.

Intel (Swiss: INTC.SW - news) signed a standstill agreement earlier this year with Altera that expires on June 1, giving the world's largest chipmaker the option to launch a hostile bid after that, according to sources familiar with the matter.
