Canada's Food Safety System Ranked World's Best

Canada ranked first out of 17 countries on food safety performance

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov 20, 2014) - Canadian Food Inspection Agency

Canada's food safety system was ranked the best in the world, in a report released today by the Conference Board of Canada in collaboration with the University of Guelph's Food Institute. Canada's food safety system tied for first place with Ireland in a comparison of 17 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.

This superior ranking highlights our success in a number of areas such as our capacity to respond to food safety emergencies, as well as food safety communication to stakeholders and the public. The report also found that public trust in food safety was the highest in Canada.

The overall world ranking score is determined by 10 indicators organized in three areas: assessment, management and communication.

On November 21, 2014 the Conference Board of Canada will be hosting a live webinar to discuss the results of this report.

Quick Facts

  • The report is a comparative study which measured and ranked Canada's food safety performance against 16 peer OECD countries, including: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.

  • Results in this study are consistent with the 2008 and 2010 world ranking reports, where Canada ranked fifth and fourth respectfully.

  • Budget 2014 is delivering a further $390M to strengthen Canada's safe food system.

  • Through our Safe Food for Canadians Action Plan and other initiatives, the Harper Government has brought in additional measures to further strengthen the Canada's food system such as tougher penalties, enhanced controls on E.coli, new meat labeling requirements and cracking down on unsafe food imports.
