New England Dominates List of Cities With Largest Sweet Tooth

New Infogroup Study Measures Concentration of Sweet Stores by City

OMAHA, NE--(Marketwired - April 05, 2016) - The New England region dominates the list of top sweet tooth cities in the U.S., according to a new study from Infogroup.

To determine which cities had the largest sweet tooth, Infogroup used its verified business database of more than 17 million records to measure the number of "sweet" retailers per city. All 381 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) in the U.S. (cities with a population of 50,000 or more), were ranked by their concentration of sweet tooth stores per 10,000 residents. The study factored ice cream parlors, candy shops, doughnut stores, and bakeries into its analysis.

Using these indicators, Infogroup ranked the following as the top 10 sweet tooth cities in the U.S.:

  1. Ocean City, NJ

  2. Barnstable, MA

  3. Salisbury, MD-DE

  4. Providence-Warwick, RI-MA

  5. Portland-South Portland, ME

  6. Norwich-New London, CT

  7. Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH

  8. Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, CT

  9. Manchester-Nashua, NH

  10. Scranton-Wilkes-Barre-Hazleton, PA

To find the metro areas with the highest concentration of sweet tooth stores, these results suggest heading northeast, as all of the top 10 are located in New England or the Mid-Atlantic states. Ocean City, NJ, topped the list with 11.7 sweet tooth shops per 10,000 residents. It also ranked first for the number of candy shops, ice cream parlors, and bakeries.

"With the growing number of specialty sweet shops across the country, we wanted to determine which cities were capitalizing on this movement the most," said Matt Graves, Chief Data Officer at Infogroup. "This doesn't mean there's an over saturation of the market in these cities. Instead, this study offers important insight on a wide variety of business opportunities for entrepreneurs looking to start their own bakery or specialty sweet shop."

Infogroup also sought to find which sweet treat (ice cream, candy, bakery treats, or doughnuts) was the most popular in each state. Its data uncovered, among other findings, that candy stores are most popular in Oregon, while doughnuts are most popular in Texas.

"Every quarter, Infogroup launches a different study that speaks to a timely trend and showcases the uniqueness of our consumer and business data," said Mike Iaccarino, Chairman and CEO of Infogroup. "Infogroup aims to be a trusted source for data-driven analytics, and we hope that those within the food and restaurant industry can benefit from these new findings when determining the best location for a new opening or project."
