With EPS Growth And More, Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN) Makes An Interesting Case

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, so investors in these companies may be taking on more risk than they should.

Despite being in the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, many investors still adopt a more traditional strategy; buying shares in profitable companies like Urban Outfitters (NASDAQ:URBN). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

How Fast Is Urban Outfitters Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Over the last three years, Urban Outfitters has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Impressively, Urban Outfitters' EPS catapulted from US$1.71 to US$3.08, over the last year. Year on year growth of 80% is certainly a sight to behold.

The music to the ears of Urban Outfitters shareholders is that EBIT margins have grown from 4.9% to 7.5% in the last 12 months and revenues are on an upwards trend as well. Both of which are great metrics to check off for potential growth.

Are Urban Outfitters Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It should give investors a sense of security owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, creating a close alignment their interests. Shareholders will be pleased by the fact that insiders own Urban Outfitters shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they have a considerable amount of wealth invested in it, currently valued at US$1.1b. That equates to 28% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. Looking very optimistic for investors.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Our quick analysis into CEO remuneration would seem to indicate they are. The median total compensation for CEOs of companies similar in size to Urban Outfitters, with market caps between US$2.0b and US$6.4b, is around US$6.7m.

Urban Outfitters' CEO took home a total compensation package of US$1.0m in the year prior to January 2024. First impressions seem to indicate a compensation policy that is favourable to shareholders. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.
