    Gold extends losses to lowest since May at $1,539.74/oz

    LONDON, April 4 (Reuters) - Gold extended earlier losses below $1,540 an ounce on Thursday, hitting its lowest since May, as investors cashed in to cover losses in equities after disappointing U.S. economic data and ahead of a European Central Bank meeting later in the day.

    Spot gold fell as low as $1,539.70 an ounce and was down 0.8 percent to $1,544.66 at 0835 GMT. U.S. gold futures for June delivery were down 0.6 percent at $1,544.31. (Reporting by Clara Denina; editing by Jason Neely)
