Google Maps Tool Shows Everywhere You've Been

A new Google (Xetra: A0B7FY - news) tool will show you a map of everywhere you've ever been with your mobile phone.

Its Timeline feature is being rolled out gradually for users on Android and desktop and lets you go back through your history to retrace your every move.

Users of Google Photos will also see geotagged pictures appear alongside places on the map that they've visited.

Frequently visited spots can also be selected and given names - such as "favourite coffee bar" or "dog park".

Google pitches the new tool as a "way to easily remember all the places you've been", including "a museum you visited during your last vacation or that fun bar you stumbled upon a few months ago".

But the privacy implications of having someone's entire routine stored in one place are likely to be a concern for some.

Google appears to have anticipated these complaints by stating in a blog post: "Your Timeline is private and visible only to you; and you control the locations you choose to keep.

"This means you can easily delete a day or your full history at any time. You can edit any place that appears in Your Timeline, including removing a specific location."

The feature will not work for those who've opted to turn off location tracking.
