Harley Davidson Reveals Electric Motorcycle
Harley Davidson has unveiled its first electric motorcycle, with a 130-mile range.
Handmade demonstration models of the bike – dubbed Project LiveWire - will be shown off at an invitation-only event in New York (Frankfurt: HX6.F - news) on Monday.
The company then plans to take several dozen riders on a 30-city tour to test drive the bikes and provide feedback.
Company president Matt Levatich said: "Like America, Harley-Davidson has reinvented itself many times in our history, with customers leading us every step of the way."
The battery-powered motorcycles have a limited range; they must be recharged after about 130 miles, and that can take 30 minutes to an hour.
And while the engine is silent, the meshing of gears emits a distinctive hum.
Marketing officer Mark-Hans Richer said: "The sound is a distinct part of the thrill. Think fighter jet on an aircraft carrier."
Harley Davidson could potentially break new ground with the vehicle, as there is currently no significant market for full-size electric motorcycles.
