Yahoo Finance Miliband wants to regulate zero hours contracts
LABOUR leader Ed Miliband is preparing to unveil plans for new legislation that he hopes will crack down on so-called zero hour contracts in the UK.
Zero hour contracts require employees to be available for work when called upon, but with no guaranteed hours or times. Despite employer groups saying they are crucial for creating jobs, Miliband argues they give staff uncertain incomes, limited job security, and reduced access to fringe employment benefits.
He will promise key measures including ensuring workers can demand a fixed-hours contract once they’ve worked regular hours for over six months with an employer and guaranteeing a fixed contract once they’ve worked at a firm for a year, according to BBC’s Newsnight.
The legislation will also protect employees from being banned from working for others or having shifts cancelled at short notice.
