Finally! Relief for motorists as Morrisons lights touch paper on petrol price war

If you’re shopping at Morrisons, you can now get 15p a litre off your petrol bill

It’s been a miserable time for motorists, car insurance has soared and diesel prices are just 0.2p from their all time highs and troubles with Iran are causing oil prices to spike.

The latest figures from the AA show the average petrol price is now £1.35 a litre while diesel costs an average of £1.42 a litre.

“The fact of the matter is that, in a period of stagnant wages, petrol costs 23p a litre more and diesel 29p a litre more than in February 2010, when fuel price rises picked up pace,” said AA president Edmund King.

But there’s a glimmer of hope – after Morrisons announced it’s knocking 15p off the price of petrol for its customers.

And with Morrisons offering a hefty discount on petrol for people who shop there, other supermarkets are almost certain to get involved and launch deals of their own.

    How it works

The deal isn’t open to everyone, sadly, to secure the discount you’ll need to spend £60 or more on groceries in a Morrisons between  February 23 and March 4.

You then get vouchers at the till - valid until 11 March 2012 - that you can present at the petrol station to get your discount when paying for fuel.

However, there are a string of exceptions: The £60 must be spent in one transaction and it excludes buying things at the petrol station itself or café, dry cleaning and the pharmacy. Items excluded are cashback, tobacco, mobile phone top ups, lottery or scratchcards, saver stamps, gift vouchers, photo printing and prescription medicines.

More on the deal can be found on the Morrisons website

They will NEVER cut the tax because they can get away with it. They know we need it - so they figure we'll pay up. And we do.

Everything we have, our whole economy is governed by the price of fuel, not oil, that's cheap, but what we get out of our filling stations, The government want our economy to improve, simple, cut the cost of fuel, that is remove some of the tax and tax on tax, and that will stimulate growth, because people with have more money in their pockets and what do people do when that happens, they spend.

Fuel price scams, thats all they are when supermarkets offer lower prices but hold you to ransom forcing you to spend £60 before you get the fuel reductions, what about people that have no need to spend that much, such as older and single members of society and people without a big family, i ts all a rip off and holding people to ransom , rip off brittain with vehicle fuel prices ,food prices, elrctric, gas, rip off,rip off all the time ,big time.

This is not a DEAL or OFFER like you think it is.

My local Tesco does the same thing. Spend £60 and get 10p of a ltr. BUT if you watch carefuly the increase the price of fuel a few days before the offer so your not really any better off. Food in store also increases to cover the costs.

As I said i my local tesco i filled up and it was 131.9 then it went 132.9 (offer started then ended) and the price went 132.9 next day 139.2.

When i can I now fill up at the little family run fuel station 10mins in the oppostite direction it might be a few pence more 141.0 but they dont pull stunts like that. GREED!

Those deals, like most at Morrisons., are good for large families. For small families it's good to buy small amounts of food rather than put half of it in the bin. And even cheap fuel wouldn't pay wasted food and money.

Or have you not heard of a freezer?!
      • Sallyann 2 months ago
Last I heard humous couldn't be frozen, neither could cucumber (not if you want it to retain flavour), neither could sun dried tomatoes, salsa verde, or anything from the delicatessen counter. Fresh pizza tastes foul if frozen. Rotisserrie chicken can't be frozen etc. So in other words purchase foods full of additives & preservatives and change your diet, and you too can save money and spend the evenings feeling bloated and gaining weight.

If you are tempted by this offer, make sure you do not pay too much for the items instore - as chances are they have adjusted prices instore to compensate for the loss they will make on fuel. Cynical - Yes lol

petrol will never come down, because we the british public put up with everything. but never do anything about it.
      • bobbathejobba 3 months ago
I don't understand. What do you propose we do - take on OPEC? Ask for more cuts in public spending so we can cut the tax on petrol? Or perhaps start car sharing and using bikes or walking?
      • javodine 3 months ago
we should all stop buying petrol for a week, watch the panick from the petrol companies, that should bring it down for a while, and when they start to get greedy and put it up again, just start over again, but watching how fast some motorists drive over the legal speed limit, you would think petrol is cheap.they must have company cars where they get the petrol paid for them,we must try something otherwise those theiving petrol companies will just keep laughing all the way to their off shore banks.

Sounds like a great deal, or at least it would be if either of the two Morrisons supermarkets in my area sold petrol.
    • Kim  •  Warwick, England  •  3 months ago
My local Morrisons doesn't have a petrol station and I don't fancy a 30 mile round trip just so I can save 15p a litre!! :(
    • Tel  •  London, England  •  3 months ago
As a careful pensioner shopper, I would find it hard to spend 60 pounds on food in one go in the 11 day qualifying period. Coupled to that, the most I could get in my fuel tank would be 25 litres as I always have a half tank full for safety reasons. My total saving would be £3.75 Big deal! I could save that by shopping at Lidl, Aldi and Home Bargains.
    • Owl  •  London, England  •  3 months ago
It would not take long to run up £60 at the till, I find Morrisons is extreamly expensive for general shopping. Although the offers are sometimes good, if you can find what you want. But you do know they will have your money from other areas of the business, this will just be a gimik. Like the Asda roll back which lasts for a week or two the rolls forward again or the Tesco price drop, anyone else notice Tesco prices rise slowly for 5 weeks just before they anounce a sale and they drop the prices back to what they where before. If they cut 15p but it did not require anything to get it then it would be a honest price drop. Just keep an eye on Morrisons shopping, i bet the price from mainstream items goes up to cover this.

All very well if you live in a large town or city where there are supermarket petrol stations. We have a Tesco, which gives these offers - but we have to drive to Newcastle or Carlisle to actually buy petrol at Tesco's - 22 or 38 miles! And why is petrol in Carlisle consistently cheaper than in Newcastle? Presumably because it is a poor place and they have to bring the price down to sell it. Supermarket petrol prices should be the same in that company's petrol stations all over the country.

what a farce, poor pensioner like me aint going to spend £60 in one go. Its like all their offers dont suit an elderly pensioner living on his own. The one word for it in my opinion is DISCRIMINATION Dave Cornwall
