It’s been a miserable time for motorists, car insurance has soared and diesel prices are just 0.2p from their all time highs and troubles with Iran are causing oil prices to spike.
The latest figures from the AA show the average petrol price is now £1.35 a litre while diesel costs an average of £1.42 a litre.
“The fact of the matter is that, in a period of stagnant wages, petrol costs 23p a litre more and diesel 29p a litre more than in February 2010, when fuel price rises picked up pace,” said AA president Edmund King.
But there’s a glimmer of hope – after Morrisons announced it’s knocking 15p off the price of petrol for its customers.
And with Morrisons offering a hefty discount on petrol for people who shop there, other supermarkets are almost certain to get involved and launch deals of their own.
How it works
The deal isn’t open to everyone, sadly, to secure the discount you’ll need to spend £60 or more on groceries in a Morrisons between February 23 and March 4.
You then get vouchers at the till - valid until 11 March 2012 - that you can present at the petrol station to get your discount when paying for fuel.
However, there are a string of exceptions: The £60 must be spent in one transaction and it excludes buying things at the petrol station itself or café, dry cleaning and the pharmacy. Items excluded are cashback, tobacco, mobile phone top ups, lottery or scratchcards, saver stamps, gift vouchers, photo printing and prescription medicines.
More on the deal can be found on the Morrisons website
