Oracle Linux images are now available on the Docker Hub Registry, a repository for Docker-based components, including applications and operating systems (OSs). Oracle Linux joins MySQL, which is already extremely popular on Docker Hub and has been downloaded millions of times. Additionally, Oracle plans to provide a new Oracle-maintained MySQL image for the official repos on Docker Hub in late February further enabling developers to rapidly benefit from the latest MySQL innovations.

Applications using the Docker open platform for distributed applications can be rapidly developed and deployed. They are portable across clouds and on-premises to help businesses innovate faster. With Oracle Linux and MySQL available on the Docker Hub Registry, Docker users will be able to easily build their applications with the certainty that comes from deploying on enterprise-grade products as they leverage a more streamlined and container-based approach to distributed application deployment. Additionally, developers can use the Docker tools directly without having to separately download OS images and manually import them into their own repository, saving time and reducing complexity.

In addition to improving availability, this also increases security by allowing kernel security fixes to be applied without creating a maintenance window.

  • Multiversion support and Oracle's Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel: Oracle Linux images on Docker are available for both Oracle Linux 6 and 7 and utilize Oracle's latest Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. This provides an Oracle tested and supported container environment that gives developers and system administrators maximum flexibility to run Oracle Linux 6 or Oracle Linux 7 containers on either version of the OS.

  • Free to use, distribute, and update: The Docker images for Oracle Linux are available under the same model as Oracle Linux itself -- simply download and use. Existing Oracle Linux customers receive support for Docker with their existing support agreements.

  • Flexibility with Oracle's Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel: Since the latest Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel runs on both Oracle Linux 6 and Oracle Linux 7, it allows users to choose which version of the OS they'd like to deploy on, potentially avoiding the need to update applications and increasing compatibility with other components.
