STOCKS NEWS EUROPE-European airlines down on bird flu concerns

Shares in European airlines slide after the first case of deadly bird flu in Hong Kong fans concern that the virus is continuing to spread beyond mainland China's borders.

Air France-KLM (Other OTC: AFLYY - news) is down 3.4 percent and Germany's Lufthansa falls 3.5 percent, compared with a 1.2 percent decline of the STOXX Europe 600 Travel & Leisure index. Travel group Thomas Cook (Xetra: A0MR3W - news) falls 3.4 percent.

"There have been new cases of bird flu in Asia, that is putting pressure on airlines," a local trader says.

British Airways owner IAG bucks the trend, easing only 0.7 percent.

A 36-year-old Indonesian domestic helper with a history of contact with poultry and travel to Shenzhen in mainland China just north of Hong Kong has been confirmed infected by H7N9 and has been hospitalised in critical condition.
