The most burgled places in Britain

A small village in Yorkshire is rivalling London for the dubious honour of being the most burgled place to live in Britain.

The village of Apperley Bridge in Yorkshire is one of the most burgled places in Britain

Britain’s most burgled postcodes have been revealed – with Yorkshire and London vying to become the highest-risk place to live.

Fully half of the top 20 were in Yorkshire, with London the next most burgled place, with Birmingham, Lincolnshire and Hertfordshire rounding off the list.

“Homeowners [in high-risk areas] need to be extra vigilant when it comes to security – installing timers on your lights and ensuring items of value are kept away from your windows are easy steps to take to reduce risk. But you never know when an opportunistic thief may strike, so it’s crucial to ensure your home contents insurance is fully up to date, and is at a high enough level to cover all your belongings sufficiently,” said Julie Fisher, head of home insurance at Moneysupermarket – who conducted the research.

Moneysupermarket looked at 3 million applications for home insurance across the UK in the last 12 months, then cross-referenced where people had made claims for burglary with where they lived to work out the areas most at risk.

Stoke Newington topped the list, with 33.6 burglary claims per 1,000 applications, followed by the picturesque village of Apperley Bridge near Bradford at 31.7 claims per 1,000 applications.

“Being in a higher risk area doesn’t necessarily mean where you live is bad or rife with crime – many thieves will target more affluent areas purely for the rewards on offer,” Fisher explained.

If convicted then you should remove items from where they call home, take the telly and xbox even if it's the parents let them know how it feels to have some thing taken. Some of the parents then might think about what teenagers are up to.

I met the Glasgow boy who was the last person to be birched. this happened on the Isle of Man in the 1960's. He said he thought that he was a "hard man" but after birching hed vowed never to get in trouble again. --- Bring back the birching,

I agree, we need to bring back REAL punishment, something that will really deter criminals. Prisons are like hotels now, they get everything they could possibly want or need, I think they should lose all their humans rights once they commit a crime and wrong society.

It's about time Post Codes were changed. I live twenty odd miles from Bradford; no crime rate, but have a Bradford Post Code. My car insurance went up £40 when I moved from Kendal in Cumbria.

Yes I agree. I moved from a high crime area to a sleepy village, but becvause a small town 8 miles away has a bad crime rate then my insurance went up too. My car used to be parked on the side of the road and is now behind 2 metre locked garden gates and it has gone up. Doesn't make sense

That's one of the incentives to steal and they advertise on the tele buying old gold. There is no such thing. Gold is gold no matter how old and these con merchants lead the dim witted to believe gold is worth less than its value.

I remember some pissed-off man got imprisoned for manslaughter in Russia after he left poisoned brandy on the table before going to holiday for a week. On his return he found 3 stenching bodies of the greedy burglars. And in Britain someone got to jail for 3 months his dog was put down because his staffordshire terrier "handled roughly" the burglars. Wonder if that would be the case in US.

Get tough on crime end of story. Criminals dont fear the law, that is the problem.

As a Police Officer who once served the West Bromwich area, it's sad to see it up there in the top 3 as the Officers there work so hard to try an prevent this from happening. The biggest problem as always is not the police action, but the way in which the courts deal with the criminals we catch. It's so frustrating to spend hours (if not not days and weeks) preparing files and gathering evidence for the courts to say, 'Yes Officer, you're right, however, a custodial sentence is not appropriate'. Spare a thought not only for the victims of these crimes, but the officers who waste their time bringing the culprits before a court. The criminal always wins unless something changes.

When will the courts listen to the people

They make out that this is perfectly normal - its terrible that we live in such a crime ridden Country and nobody seems to be doing anything about it

If they know this then target them, catch them and remove them from society. It is the same with those driving without insurance. Punish them that are caught not just a smacked wrist.

I used to be a volunteer with Victim support and got sick of do-gooders who argued burglary was a victimless crime. Many thing stolen are of emotional and not fiscal value. Then there are those who are left afraid to live in, or leave their homes after this. Plus on top of it all, are the do-gooders who say these people need help. What these people need is a healthy dose of Sharia Law. No need for prisons, just chop a finger off for each crime committed, should soon get re-offending rates down. I saw too many people's lives ruined by this crime!

I'm from Roundhay Leeds originally.... Makes grim reading, lot's of Heroin and Crack on the streets to blame I'm afraid. The police do a sterling job but are fighting an uphill battle when there are large tracts of disenfranchised and unemployed young men with limited things to live for. It is our tragedy.

These idiots get away with murder and this is why. Did you know a burglar is allowed to be convicted of theft 3 times before they are prosecuted?!!! What kind of bladdy law is that! And if you confront them, you can only use reasonable force????????????? The law seems to be in their favour.
