UK GAS-Prices rise on colder weather outlook

* Prices for weekend jump by 5.9 percent

* Gas system oversupplied by 28 mcm

Jan 11 (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices rose on Monday on expectations for colder weather to boost demand towards the weekend, despite higher imports from Norway resulting in an oversupplied system.

British gas prices for weekend delivery jumped 5.9 percent to 35 pence per therm on forecasts that temperatures will fall well below normal towards the weekend.

"Prompt and near curve contracts have opened higher on the back of a fall in temperature forecasts to below seasonal normal levels, despite the significantly oversupplied system," a UK gas trader said.

The day-ahead contract gained 0.85 pence or 2.52 percent to 34.60 pence/therm by 0915 GMT, supported by the weekend prices.

Weather in Britain is expected to remain cold and unsettled at least until the start of next week, with widespread frosts at night, the UK's Met Office said.

Meanwhile, gas for immediate delivery rose only 0.05 pence to 33.90 pence per therm due to an oversupplied system.

The gas system was oversupplied by 28 mcm with demand forecast at 306 million cubic metres (mcm) and flows at around 334 mcm, National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news) data showed.

Imports from Norway rose by 13 mcm on Monday from last Friday after an outage at Kaarstoe gas processing plant ended on Saturday.

Gas flows at UK's Barrow terminal were restarted after a short outage on Sunday and running at around 4 mcm/day.

Further along the curve, contract for gas delivery next-month rose by 0.5 pence to 34.35 pence/therm.

LNG tanker Rasheeda was confirmed to deliver cargo from Qatar to South Hook terminal on Jan. 18.

The day-ahead gas price at the Dutch TTF hub rose 0.31 euro/MWh or 2.13 percent, at 14.88 euro/MWh.

In the European carbon market, front-year allowances firmed 0.09 euro to 7.55 euro a tonne.
