UK GAS-Prices rise on tighter system as Norwegian supply dips

* Within-day gas up 0.85 p/therm to 34.20 p/therm

* Exports from UK to Europe stay strong

July 4 (Reuters) - British prompt gas prices rose on Monday as demand rose due to a lower supply from Norway, a high level of exports to Europe and lower wind generation.

Gas for instant delivery rose by 0.85 pence per therm to 34.20 pence/therm by 0945 GMT, while the month-ahead contract for August was up 0.42 pence/therm at 35.3 pence/therm.

Higher gas demand, strong UK gas exports through the InterconnectorUK pipeline to Europe and more consumption by gas-fired power plants owing to reduced generation from wind farms is helping drive gas price gains, said Marcel Boonaert, head of trading and portfolio at Wingas UK.

Demand was 191.1 million cubic metres (mcm) a day, 12 percent above seasonal average levels, while supply was estimated at 190.7 mcm/day, leaving the the transmission network slightly short of gas, according to National Grid (LSE: NG.L - news) data.

Imports through the Langeled pipeline from Norway fell to 14 mcm/day from 16 mcm/day on Friday. Exports from Britain to the continent through the recently reopened Interconnector UK (IUK) pipeline stayed strong at around 39 mcm/day.

UK Continental Shelf flows rose to 143 mcm/day from 136 mcm/day on Friday, driven by higher deliveries to the Bacton and Theddlethorpe terminals, analysts at Thomson Reuters (Dusseldorf: TOC.DU - news) said.

Three liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers are expected to arrive at UK terminals by next Thursday.

The contract for winter 2016 gas delivery traded 0.60 pence/therm higher at 44.50 pence per therm.

In the Netherlands, the day-ahead gas contract at the TTF hub was down by 0.10 euro at 14.25 euros per megawatt-hour.

In Europe's carbon market, the front-year EU allowance price was up 0.20 euro or 4.33 percent at 4.82 euros per tonne. (Reporting by Oleg Vukmanovic, editing by Nina Chestney)
