I love the smell of freshly baked bread, but it’s rare that I smell it. I’ve tried making a loaf or two in my day, but I’m no baker — store-bought works just fine for me. However, I recently stumbled across this Village Candle on Amazon and shoppers claim it really smells like warm buttered bread. I can’t decide if it’s awesome or weird, though.

The product description simply states it has “fragrance notes of warm buttered bread,” and more than 1,000 Amazon customers say that it smells like the real deal.

This candle is so unique,” wrote one person in the reviews. “Absolutely smells like there’s a loaf of homemade bread baking in the oven. The scent travels throughout the house and I could not be happier with this candle.”

On one hand, I think it’s great if you want your home to smell like a French boulangerie, or if you want to fool yourself into thinking you’re living TikTok’s cottagecore/homemaker aesthetic. You can skip the hard work of actually baking and simply buy yourself a loaf, then light this candle. Additionally, bread has a pretty neutral smell. It’s not floral, woodsy, musky or overly sweet, so it could be a good alternative to the standard “clean linen” fragrance for a cozy indoor day.

Also, brands make candles that smell like baked goods all the time! Bath and Body Works has a very fragrant Pumpkin Pecan Waffle candle and you can find vanilla-scented candles almost anywhere. Bread is definitely less sweet smelling, but it’s still a baked good.

So, all in all, the Warm Buttered Bread candle is not that weird. The main downside is that when you smell it, you may get hungry, so you better actually have some bread and butter on hand.
