12:57 p.m. - "Going Up Yonder," a gospel tune, played during the procession:

12:53 p.m. – “Next year, when the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup, you might think of Mr. Hockey. You might see a No. 9 and remember him. That’s just the Holy Spirit nudging you along.”

12:15 p.m. – Engaging sermon, using Gordie Howe’s life of service – to the game, to his fans, to his family – as a reminder that we all need to recognize our purpose.

Oh, and also: “Hopefully he doesn’t elbow too many angels.”

12:04 p.m. – This is wonderful, chronicling the many facets of Gordie Howe’s life, including how good he made people feel. Even with just taking out his false teeth.

11:51 a.m. – “Alright, let’s talk about the Lord. No disrespect, but it’s Lord Stanley.”

11:49 a.m. – You know, maybe my dad wouldn’t have had to drag me to church as a kid if more of these sermons included the words “Gordie Howe Hat Trick.”

11:48 a.m. – The homily opens with references to Mr. Hockey and Mrs. Hockey. “Registered trademarks, so don’t you go stealing it,” said the priest.

11:37 a.m. –  Always weird to hear Mr. Hockey referred to as “Gordon.”

11:31 p.m. ET – Murray Howe said Gordie once told him what he wanted said at his funeral. “Finally, the end of the third period. … I hope there’s a good hockey team in heaven.”

Murray Howe: “Once you join the team, they won’t just be good. They will be great.”

Very moving speech from his son.

11:28 a.m. ET – “Mr. Hockey left the world with no regrets. And although he didn’t lead the league in church attendance, he lived the life of a faithful service.” – Murray Howe on Gordie.

11:23 a.m. ET – Steve Yzerman and Wayne Gretzky get shout-outs along with some classic players like Hull and Orr.

11:19 a.m. ET – Great stories. The time he shoveled a neighbor’s driveway, the neighbor said he didn’t ask him to do that, so he shoveled the snow right back onto the driveway. The time he held the door for a lady, she said she didn’t ask for the door to be held, and he asked “I thought you were a lady.”

11:13 a.m. ET - Still thinking about this from the memorial service:

11:11 a.m. ET – “He was powerful. Who else did you know could bring a man to his knees with a handshake?” – Murray Howe

11:09 a.m. ET – "He never had a bad thing to say about anyone -- except referees." - Murray Howe.

11:08 a.m. ET – “Don’t ever gripe about the cards you’ve been dealt, don’t worry about anyone else’s hand, just play the card the best you can, and be thankful that you get to play.” – Gordie Howe’s advice to Murray Howe.

11:06 a.m. ET – Dr. Murray Howe, speaking on behalf of the Howe family, says he “still pinches himself” about the fact that Gordie Howe was his father. “As if a bridge wasn’t enough, he has his name on schools, ice rinks, books, movies” as well as the “Gordie Howe elbow” and the Gordie Howe hat trick.” He said half the kids in Saskatoon are named after him.
