East London bus drivers at Stagecoach get 10% pay hike

The spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in South Shields

(Reuters) - A British workers' union said on Wednesday it had secured a 10% pay increase for more than 900 bus workers in East London from bus operator Stagecoach Group amid a surge in cost of living.

The pay rise will be backdated to April 2022, Unite said, adding that its members voted to accept the offer after talks with the company.

The wage increase follows similar raises at bus operators Arriva and Go-Ahead and against the backdrop of many British labour unions going on strike seeking a pay rise amid surging food and energy bills.

Last month, Arriva's drivers in Kent secured a 13.92% pay rise, while Go-Ahead's London workers fetched a 10.5% increase.

"We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Unite ... Across the country, we have been working constructively with our trade unions to agree fair pay deals," said a spokesperson for Stagecoach.
