Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré has won re-election in the November 22 poll with 57.87% of the vote, according to full preliminary results announced by the election commission on Thursday. Having won more than 50% of the total ballots cast, Kaboré has secured enough votes to avoid a second round. Some analysts had expected a closer contest on Sunday between Kaboré, who was elected president of Burkina Faso in 2015, and his main rivals, who argued he had failed to contain jihadist and ethnic violence that forced 1 million people to flee their homes during his first term.Sunday's presidential and parliamentary elections were held in the shadow of jihadist violence, with a surge in attacks by groups with links to al Qaeda and the Islamic State group claiming more than 2,000 lives this year alone. The presidential election results read out by the election commission on Thursday showed Kaboré taking 57.87% of the vote while his two closest rivals, Zéphirin Diabré and Eddie Komboigo, got 12.46% and 15.48%, respectively.Kaboré's opponents have raised concerns about the validity of the vote count. But the electoral commission has dismissed those and an international observer mission gave the election a mostly clean bill of health.(FRANCE 24 with AFP and REUTERS)

Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore has won re-election by a comfortable margin, preliminary results showed on Thursday, after an election marred by insecurity that prevented swathes of the West African country from voting. Some analysts had expected a closer contest on Sunday between Kabore, who was elected in 2015, and his main rivals, who argued he had failed to contain Islamist and ethnic violence that forced 1 million people to flee their homes during his first term. The results read out by the election commission showed Kabore won 57.87% of the vote.

Women's marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei said on Thursday she was gearing up for New Delhi's half-marathon on Sunday, dismissing fears around the novel coronavirus outbreak and polluted air in the capital city. The 26-year-old, who won the London Marathon in October, will race alongside many of the world's leading long-distance runners at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon 2020. "When I told my family that I want to go to India for a marathon even during a pandemic, they supported my decision and told me to do well and take care of myself," Kosgei told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.
While London’s hospitality industry is by no means out of deep water, Matt Hancock’s announcement today that London will be under Tier 2 restrictions will have caused relief among many of the capital’s restaurateurs who feared a lockdown-style Tier 3 – though the news will be of little comfort to “wet led” pubs, which are forced to remain closed. Much has been made of the rule around serving alcohol in Tier 2; Government guidance states that beer, wine and spirits can only be served alongside “substantial meals”. While on social media there have been winking suggestions around what constitutes a substantial meal – suggesting a traditional boozer could perhaps get away a pack of scampi fries and a soggy sandwich –the official guidance is actually much stricter than this: pubs and bars must remain closed unless they pivot to operate as a restaurant.
