UPDATE 1-Shell Norco, Louisiana refinery restarts coker -sources

(Adds company statement; background about unit)

HOUSTON, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell Plc has restarted the coker at its 225,300-barrel-per-day (bpd) Norco, Louisiana, refinery, sources familiar with plant operations said on Thursday.

The 25,000-bpd coker, restarted late on Wednesday, was shut in mid-July for a planned overhaul that finished late last week, the sources said.

Shell spokesman Ray Fisher said the Norco refinery is restarting units after planned maintenance. He did not identify the units being restarted.

Cokers convert residual crude oil from distillation units into feedstocks for motor fuels or petroleum coke, a coal substitute. (Reporting by Erwin Seba; editing by Jonathan Oatis and Tom Brown)
