£1 sun cream and free headphones: this week's deals and discounts

There’s a great bunch of money-saving deals and discounts for you to grab this week, including £900 to claim if you’re married, free strawberries and cream, and £1 sun cream.

But don’t forget, a bargain is only a good deal if you were planning to splash out on it anyway.

Beat the heat and save money

There’s a round-up of ways to cut the cost of keeping cool at MoneySavingExpert.

It includes £1 sun cream, cheap fans and an interesting suggestion of how to keep yourself cool at night – but would you put your duvet in the freezer?

Cut water bills in the heatwave

The heatwave is encouraging us all to use more water but if you want to cut down your bills, you’ll need to analyse your usage to work out where you can cut back.

Free digital tools such as the aqKWa Savings Engine will analyse your water usage and give you personalised advice. Average yearly savings are £88 a year.

Protecting your plants

Meanwhile, check that your home insurance includes cover for your garden.

Financial analyst Defaqto reckons that more than a third of policies don’t provide any cover for plants. It’s only provided as standard on around half of policies, while a further 14% offer it as an optional add on.

If you’re not covered, it may be worth adding insurance to save yourself being out of pocket if your precious plants are stolen or damaged.

Free headphones with mobile contract

Tesco Mobile will hand headphones, a tablet or speaker worth between £99 and £279 to people who sign up for a contract on a range of Samsung smartphones, starting from £30.99 a month.

The range includes the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ and the Samsung Note 8.

Is it a deal worth doing? You should find out how much similar deals cost at rival phone retailers before rushing to get the freebie as it could pay you to get a contract elsewhere and use the savings to get the headphones you want.

Use a comparison site such as Mobiles or Moneysupermarket.

Shampoo for a fiver at Poundland

Budget chain Poundland is offering shampoo and conditioner that it says normally costs £25 for just a fiver.

The TIGI Curls Rock and Colour Combat shampoo and conditioner will be £5 in stores from Friday 29 June until stocks last.

10% off Converse footear

You can get 10% off everything Converse until next Saturday 7 July by using an exclusive code through MyVoucherCodes. There’s also a sale at the sneaker site with footwear at up to 30% off.

Free strawberries and cream

With the annual Wimbledon tennis tournament starting from Monday, TopCashback is giving away free strawberries and cream to new members.

You’ll need to sign up TopCashback and then snap a photo of your receipt for strawberries and cream to get £5 cash back.

The site is giving all new members £5 to spend on the sweet treat until Sunday 15 July.

Tip of the week

Married? You can claim up to £900 in tax relief, points out Sarah Coles, personal finance analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown.

“If you’re eligible for a tax break, it’s worth taking advantage of it,” she says. “As time has gone on, the backdated sums have started to add up, so a million couples could spend a few minutes with an online form, and get up to £900 in their account in time for the summer holidays.”

How does it work? Everyone has a tax-free personal allowance of £11,850. If you are married, one of you is a non-taxpayer, and the other is a basic rate taxpayer, the non-taxpayer can transfer £1,190 of their allowance to their partner. This reduces their tax bill by up to £238 this year.

You can backdate your claim for every year you were eligible since the allowance was introduced in April 2015 to claim up to £900 in total.
