104-Year-Old Ruth is Walking a Marathon for Charity & To ‘Keep Fit’ - She’s Raised £25k So Far

From Women's Health

  • Ruth Sanders is 104 years old and, since September 8th, has been walking around her block each day, aiming to complete the marathon distance of 26.2 miles

  • Sanders says she was inspired by Capt. Sir Tom Moore, the heroic walker who raised £32 million for the NHS earlier this year

  • So far, Sanders has raised just shy of £25k for her long term charity, the Thames Valley Air Ambulance

Ready for a heavy hit of inspiration? 104 year old Ruth Sanders is currently walking 26.2 miles to raise money for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance (TVAA).

A goal born out of a lengthy COVID-19 lockdown and her yearly wish to raise money for the TVAA, Sanders began her walking marathon on September 8th, expecting to complete the 26.2 mile distance by mid-November.

'I usually do something for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance every year, and this year I can't have a coffee morning or anything like that,' she said, speaking to BBC News.

'I said to my son "oh I'm fed up, all through the lockdown I have never been outside my gate... I'm going for a little walk around the block,"' she continues.

'So I did and while I was going round I thought what am I doing this for? I know. Thames Valley Air Ambulance. So that's how I started raising money for them.'

All money raised by Sanders is going towards the Thames Valley Air Ambulance. Her original goal of £500 has been totally surpassed with current figures at £24,975 – that's 4995% of her target! G'wan, Ruth.
