I’m a big believer that all food is healthy — some will benefit you physically, and some is just good for the soul. In other words, I never think you skip out on pancakes at brunch or late night pizza with friends. It’s all about moderation. But I’ve always found nutrition, and the science behind it, fascinating. Through this interest, I‘ve learned that the right food can help fuel your body to perform at its best.

A few years ago, I was approached by the team at Brooks Running to train with them and marathon runner Shadrack Biwott for my first marathon (shout out to my favorite Brooks Ghost running shoes!). I had never been a big runner, and never ran more than a 5K race. But my mother actually convinced me to do it. “You’re young,” I remember her saying. “When will you ever get another chance to train like this?”

The training was intense, and it took real motivation and dedication. I realized that if I wanted to run long distances, I had to eat right. And, I found, tweaking my diet made a huge difference.

Before the marathon training, I could wake up, have a cup of coffee and go run for 30 minutes in the park. But when taking on the longer distances, I learned that I needed to eat carbs, like oatmeal and a banana, two hours before running. If I didn’t eat enough, I’d feel weak and if I ate too close to the run, I’d feel nauseous. Then, through trial and error, I found the right carb-loaded energy gummies to eat while running, and the perfect protein shake to drink after so I wouldn’t collapse within an hour from exhaustion.

This episode of In The Know Live: Kitchen Gadgets celebrates finding what fuels your body and mind — and doing it with good food and good beverages. For me, this includes Kind’s Frozen Smoothie Bowls, Sunbasket’s Fresh & Ready meals, Olipop soda, an electric tea kettle and more.

But keep in mind, this is what works for me. I’m not a dietitian and if you’re seeking real nutrition advice, you should talk to a medical professional.
