Yahoo Finance 150 feared dead in huge floods due to Uttarakhand glacier break
Over 150 personnel working at a power project in Tapovan-Reni area of Uttarakhand are missing and feared dead after a glacier broke off in Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday, causing a massive flood in the Dhauli Ganga river and endangering the lives of people living along its banks.
Speaking to news agency ANI, ITBP DG, SS Deswal said that 9-10 bodies have been recovered from the river. Earlier, Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Om Prakash said around 150 are feared dead.
Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar told PTI that at least ten bodies have been recovered, while some injured have been rescued after state disaster response forces reached the affected areas.
He said the power project at Tapovan-Reni has been swept away completely.
Several districts, including Pauri, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Haridwar and Dehradun, are likely to be affected and have been put on high alert. Rafting has been stopped in Rishikesh. Uttarakhand police said water level in Srinagar, Rishikesh and Haridwar may breach the danger mark.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat appealed to people to not spread rumours through old flood videos. He said all districts concerned have been alerted and people have been asked not to go near the Ganga. Rawat cancelled all his programmes scheduled for the day.'The situation is under control now. There is a dam at Srinagar and it has contained the flow. The power project has taken the damage.' 'Our preliminary estimate is that 50-100 people who were working in and around the power project are missing,' the state police chief said.
The teams had reached the spot very quickly from Joshimath (about 20 minutes distance) and they rescued some injured while two bodies were also found, he said.
'We will be able to give you a clear picture by the evening,' Kumar said.Although details are awaited, several districts, including Pauri, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Haridwar and Dehradun, are likely to be affected and have been put on high alert.
