When it comes to haircare, male needs are often overlooked. And while most haircare products are not gender-exclusive, it’s very rare to see boys and men advertised in brands’ marketing campaigns or even in product education. Even in the textured haircare market, Black and brown boys take a backseat to the ever-expanding assortment of women-targeted products.

However, news flash: Black and brown boys have textured hair, too.

That’s why I was excited to learn about KingCurls, a Black-owned haircare brand that specifically caters to Gen-Z Black men.

“KingCurls haircare brand is dedicated to creating healthy solutions for today’s modern male,” it says on their site. “Our aim is to provide essential products that enrich and support naturally textured hair. Our goal is to break the gender gaps that are present amongst women brands in the hair and beauty industry by providing options that allow boys, and young adults to feel inclusive and empowered in celebrating their unique hair identity.”

The brand’s founder, Khalil, is a 17-year-old influencer who already knows what it’s like for him and his hair to be in the spotlight. With over 61,000 followers on Instagram and almost one million followers on TikTok alone, Khalil has already garnered over 10 million views for his educational and informative videos on how he cares for his hair.

Although I am not a TikTok person, a simple scroll down Khalil’s page shows that he is on a mission to normalize Black men caring for and maintaining their hair.
