One of the good things about social media is that all different kinds of people can share how they navigate life. Rae Green, a 19-year-old college student who is blind, educates and entertains on her TikTok account, raegreen135.
Green answers common questions to help others understand what being blind is like for her. For example, she looks up when someone speaks to her because she only has vision in her lower eye. So when she looks up, she’s actually trying to look directly at the speaker. A small piece of information like this can help to normalize behaviors.
In another video, Green shows how she does her grocery shopping. Normally she calls the supermarket ahead of time and they have someone assist her, but for the clip, a friend is standing in.
Green holds the end of the cart, while her friend holds the front to guide her through the aisles. When she needs an item from a certain section, in this case it’s ramen, the friend hands it to her. Green uses her tactile senses to make sure it’s exactly what she wants. She then places it in the cart so she knows precisely where it is. Once she is ready to leave, her friend tells her where the barcode is on the ramen and Green uses the self-checkout machine with ease.
The serviceable video received 2.3 million views on TikTok.
“I love going on these adventures with you,” one user wrote.
“You have a good support system,” another said.
“Thanks for educating us!” someone added.
