Jamie Oliver must have thought his luck was in when builders unearthed £1 million worth of treasure in the cellar of his new Manchester restaurant.

Safety deposit boxes dating back to 1935 were dug up on the site, which used to be an old Midland Bank.

According to The Sun, Bank of England officials used a drill to break open the boxes, which contained everything from jewellery and gold, to master tapes by Joy Division and New Order, and even a gun.

But Jamie didn't get to keep the stash - instead it went straight to the Treasury.

The new Jamie's Italian opens today in Manchester, and is located next door to Rio Ferdinand's eaterie.

The diner is spread over three floors, including the ground floor banking hall, mezzanine antechambers in the old clerk's offices, and the basement vault room.

The Jamie's Italian empire is a burgeoning business, with a total of 26 restaurants in the UK, including sites at Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, St Albans, Covent Garden and Cardiff; there are also two international Jamie's Italians, one in Dubai and another in Sydney.
