Here’s how I find good dividend stocks

When researching a dividend stock, I always follow the following screening criteria:

  • Is its annual yield among the top 25% of dividend-paying companies?

  • Does it consistently pay out dividends without missing a payment of significantly cutting payout?

  • Has dividend per share risen in the past couple of years?

  • Does earnings amply cover its dividend payments?

  • Based on future earnings growth, will it be able to continue to payout dividend at the current rate?

How well does Weis Markets fit our criteria?

Weis Markets has a trailing twelve-month payout ratio of 29%, which means that the dividend is covered by earnings. Furthermore, analysts have not forecasted a dividends per share for the future, which makes it hard to determine the yield shareholders should expect, and whether the current payout is sustainable, moving forward.

When considering the sustainability of dividends, it is also worth checking the cash flow of a company. A company with strong cash flow, relative to earnings, can sometimes sustain a high pay out ratio.

If dividend is a key criteria in your investment consideration, then you need to make sure the dividend stock you’re eyeing out is reliable in its payments. In the case of WMK it has increased its DPS from $1.16 to $1.24 in the past 10 years. It has also been paying out dividend consistently during this time, as you’d expect for a company increasing its dividend levels. This is an impressive feat, which makes WMK a true dividend rockstar.

Relative to peers, Weis Markets produces a yield of 2.5%, which is high for Consumer Retailing stocks but still below the market’s top dividend payers.

Next Steps:

Considering the dividend attributes we analyzed above, Weis Markets is definitely worth keeping an eye on for someone looking to build a dedicated income portfolio.
