A TikTok fashion trend went viral in recent months called the “old money aesthetic.” The look is a little bit preppy, sometimes monochromatic and often pieces together high-quality basics. Essentially, if you combine Princess Diana and Jackie Kennedy’s styles, this is what you’d get. However, you can transition the look from your closet to your home with a few easy steps. Ironically, you don’t have to spend a lot to make your home look expensive.

More specifically, you can make your bed look like it came straight off the Pottery Barn website with a few tips and tricks. First, start with clearing away any clutter. If your nightstand is filled with chapsticks and jewelry, clear it off. If your clean laundry is still sitting on your bed, put it away. Clean lines are key to the “old money aesthetic.”

After organizing, here are a few things you can get to make your bed look and feel more expensive.

1. Put two duvet inserts in your duvet cover

If you shop at West Elm or Crate & Barrel, you may notice that the beds there are extra fluffy. That’s because home stores often use two or more duvet inserts inside a duvet cover. Of course, duvet inserts can get pretty pricey, but you can find more affordable (yet still fluffy) options on Amazon for under $50, like the uber-popular Bedsure All-Season Down Alternative (the queen size is on sale for only $27.88 right now!).

That said, if you like to sleep with your duvet at night, two inserts may get a little hot. Instead, you can make your bed with two separate duvet inserts and duvet covers. Use one duvet on the bottom to sleep with, and use another as a decorative topper that you can remove at night. When making your bed in the morning, fold the bottom duvet back over the top one for a hotel-inspired look.

2. Add contrasting throw pillows

If you prefer all-white bedding, go with it. But you should have fun with your throw pillows! A little contrast can add dimension to the look — think about making your bed like putting together an outfit. If you don’t like the idea of mixing colors, pick one color and choose pillows within that color spectrum. For example, if you choose blue, you can mix navy and dusty light blue pillows. Pottery Barn’s Everywhere Velvet Pillow Covers have a solid velvet fabric that’s super soft and comes in plenty of complementary colors for mixing and matching.

3. Upgrade your linens

You can often feel the difference between the price of fabrics. For example, you can feel how much softer a cashmere sweater is than a regular cotton one. When it comes to bedding, bamboo is sustainable, super soft, naturally cooling and some of the best money can buy. Top brands can be expensive, but you can find more affordable bamboo options on Amazon, like this set from Cosy House Collection.
