Like a lot of people, I do my best reading at the beach. There is just something about the white noise of the waves that helps me to really lock into a book. But since beach days are still a few weeks away for me, I’ve been treating myself to monthly trips to my local Barnes & Noble to pick up a few new reads.
Having a couple of fresh books around is enough incentive for me to get outside and read on a park bench. And it’s also a great way for me to get off my phone for an hour or two.
So if you’re also in need of a couple of good books that will take you somewhere new mentally, check out three fictional novels below that I read in the past month — and would read again in a heartbeat.
1. “Something in the Water” by Catherine Steadman, $11.54 for paperback
What it’s about: This psychological thriller follows newlyweds Erin and Mark as they head out on their dream honeymoon to Bora Bora. While the location is absolute paradise and they’ve never been more in love, things take a dark turn after a remote scuba diving trip leads the couple to find something in the water.
Why I loved it: I read this book over the course of a weekend and couldn’t bear to put it down. Honestly, I was hooked after reading the book’s very first line: “Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?” Steadman’s descriptions paint detailed pictures for the reader every step of the way, and I loved that she gives the reader a glimpse into Erin’s thought process.
While some aspects of Erin and Mark’s nightmarish situation are definitely farfetched at times, I was guessing until the very last chapter how this story wraps up. Pick this up the next time you need a good beach read.

2. “In Five Years” by Rebecca Serle, $12.74 for paperback
What it’s about: After Dannie Kohn accepts her long-term boyfriend’s marriage proposal and nails her dream job interview on the same day, she falls asleep content but wakes up in a different apartment, wearing a different ring and laying next to a different man. After spending one hour exactly five years in the future, she returns to her present-day life but can’t shake what she saw.
Why I loved it: As a type-A person myself, I loved this book and all of the twists and turns that Dannie finds herself navigating through as she tries to fend off the future that she saw that one night. The book is described as an “unforgettable love story, but it is not the one you’re expecting,” and that is the perfect way to put it, in my opinion.
After I finished this book (and cried through the last 80+ pages), I immediately gave it to my best friend to read. If you could use a reminder that things work out how they should, but not always in the way you imagined them, then you’ll adore “In Five Years.”

3. “The Last Mrs. Parrish” by Liv Constantine, $10.49 for paperback
What it’s about: Amber Patterson is on a mission to become powerful and wealthy, no matter the cost. This dangerous ambition leads Amber to befriend the beautiful and kind Daphne, who is married to the wealthy real-estate mogul Jackson Parrish. After manipulating Daphne and inserting herself into the lives of the Parrish family, Amber thinks she’s about to get everything she wants — but it’s never as it seems.
Why I loved it: This thriller is a wild ride from beginning to end. And not only does Amber have a dark secret from her past that she has to hide, which adds a fun layer to the story, but becoming a part of the Parrish’s lives takes some real creativity. I also love that the first half of the book is from Amber’s point of view, while the second is from Daphne’s.
Without wanting to spoil anything, let’s just say that the twist at the end of this book is one of the most unexpected I’ve ever read.
