Buying railway tickets early normally means cheaper tickets, but how early do you need to buy?

Trainline’s Price Prediction tool, which is included in its app, uses data to show when ticket prices are likely to rise.

Search for a specific route and it will list the cheapest prices available, indicate when the route could sell out and then show incremental price changes depending on the date of booking.

For example, a standard class Advance single fare from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly is £27 at 96 days before the day of travel, £39.5 at 34 days before travel, £88 at 14 days before and a whopping £145 on the day of travel itself.

Tip of the week

Here’s a simple but clever way to ensure you don’t overspend, from Nicola of The Frugal Cottage.

“Use cash envelopes for your budget, as it’s harder to spend cash than to swipe your card,” she advises.

“At the beginning of the month you decide on the categories and what amount should be in there.

“Withdraw the cash and only use that during the month – it can be a big eye opener as to how much you might spend!”

Nicola has lots more great money-saving tips on her site.
