4 lip glosses that I, a former matte lipstick purist, cannot stop wearing

Our team is dedicated to finding and telling you more about the products and deals we love. If you love them too and decide to purchase through the links below, we may receive a commission. Pricing and availability are subject to change.

Before the pandemic, I was known for always wearing my signature matte lipstick. I kneeled at the altars of my two holy grail red lips: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella and Kylie Cosmetics Matte Lip Kit in Mary Jo K. I pounced on every Kylie Lip Kit launch before they sold out and almost fainted when I first applied the Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint. Lip glosses and lip oils? You’d never catch me dead in them.

Once quarantine and mask-wearing came into the picture, I stopped wearing my signature lip — and all makeup in general. I wasn’t going out with friends or into the office anymore, and, honestly, I just wasn’t feeling up to it. Over two years later, lip glosses and lip oils are in, and matte lipsticks are aggressively out.

After a brief mourning period, I decided to see what the glossy hype was all about. I grabbed my KN95 and my wallet and booked it to the nearest Sephora — leaving with the Tower 28 ShineOn Jelly Lip Gloss in oat. A couple of months later, I can firmly say I am a converted gloss girl.

Below, shop the best lip glosses and lip oils that I truly can’t stop wearing and buying. No, seriously, I can’t stop buying them and needed to buy a separate makeup bag for my collection.

Starting off this list hot, the Tower 28 ShineOn Jelly Lip Gloss is the gloss that officially turned me into a gloss girly. With 12 shades and two different nourishing finishes to choose from, I say treat the Tower 28 gloss like Pokémon and catch ’em all.

While this is technically a story about lip glosses, I’m honestly obsessed with everything Tower 28 has dropped (you can read my love letter to the SOS Spray here). Plus, every product is vegan, cruelty-free and formulated with sensitive skin in mind. Join my fan club, and we can coordinate our ShineOn Jelly Lip Gloss colors for the next meeting.

Come on — you knew she was going to make an appearance on the list. The DIOR Addict Lip Glow Oil is that bougie makeup product worth the price tag if you can justify the cost. Unfortunately, thanks to recent TikTok fame, it’s sold out basically everywhere — but I’ve been able to hunt it down with a few tricks.

First, DIOR frequently restocks its colors online, so just keep checking back or set an alert for the color you want. Alternatively, I’ve had a ton of luck finding them IRL at my local Sephora. Just click the “Buy Now from Sephora” button above and select the “Buy Online & Pick Up” option or “Same-Day Delivery” on the item page to see which stores near you have the DIOR lip oil in stock.

3. Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss, $22

First off, how amazing is this packaging? More importantly, the Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss has truly impeccable staying power. The formulation includes hyaluronic acid to lock in hydration and peptides to plump up your lips while still offering a pigmented pop of color, making this lip oil gloss a true hybrid makeup/skin care product.

Out of the four on this list, the Kosas lip oil is the one I prefer to keep in my bag for constant access.

4. ITEM Beauty by Addison Rae Lip Quip Clean Moisturizing Lip Gloss, $14

Except for Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty and Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty, I haven’t been drawn to many celebrity beauty brands. However, Addison Rae knew what she was doing when she released the ITEM Beauty Lip Quip.

It packs a ton of shine into such a tiny bottle that it honestly defies the laws of physics. If you’re in the market for a bright watermelon lip that verges on a true red, Heartstoppin’ (pictured) is your answer.
