Can this 5-in-1 kitchen tool really replace your entire silverware drawer?

That’s what some TikTokers say about the Joseph Joseph Uni-Tool 5-In-1 Utensil. The viral gadget, which combines a spatula, chef’s knife, serving spoon, butter knife and slotted spoon all into one, is basically the Swiss Army Knife of cooking.

To the editors at In The Know, that sounded like a challenge. And, considering that we never shy away from the chance to test out a trendy new gadget, we decided to try it ourselves.

So, we put the 5-in-1 kitchen tool to the test — with a full-on breakfast cook-off. To find out what happened, watch the video above, or keep reading!

So what can the Joseph Joseph 5-in-1 kitchen tool do?

To test our 5-in-1 tool, we decided to cook every millennial’s dream breakfast: avocado toast. This item was selected mainly because it’s delicious, but also because it would force us to use every one of the tool’s functions.

For comparison, we tested the gadget against the five tools it replaces (again: a spatula, chef’s knife, serving spoon, butter knife and slotted spoon). We judged both options on three points of criteria: Speed, price and performance.

Speed: The 5-in-1 kitchen tool won out here, making our avocado toast in just over 15 minutes — meanwhile, it took our set of five tools closer to 16 minutes. Where we really saved time was during the cleanup, where we found ourselves with only one gadget to wash off.

Price: This was another win for the 5-in-1 tool. The gadget was $19 at the time of filming (but is now on sale for even less). That’s nothing compared to the minimum of $40 you’d pay for a decent set of the tools it replaces.

Performance: The gadget failed us here, but only a little. The 5-in-1 tool tackled every task perfectly except for slicing and mashing the avocado, which became a bit of a mess. So, score one for the regular tools here.

Well, there you have it. This 5-in-1 tool can’t do everything but it comes pretty close — while also being cheaper and faster. Unless you eat avocado toast every day of your life, it’s certainly worth a buy.
