5 life-saving organizations that need your help this holiday season

Across the country and around the globe, charitable organizations are working daily to provide crucial assistance to people in need. Whether it’s offering critical treatments for cancer patients or delivering food and medical supplies to hard-hit communities, so many organizations are not only improving lives — they’re also saving them.

Traveling home for the holidays? Here are 4 things you need to do right now.

During this holiday season, when people are balancing big purchases with giving back, it helps to know more about the organizations that are bringing regular sustenance and support to a variety of communities. Here are five charitable organizations that are saving lives through their tireless work. Any of these nonprofits would welcome your support during the holidays and beyond.

1. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

A leader in childhood cancer research, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital provides a wealth of services to families whose children are battling cancer and other life-threatening pediatric diseases. The organization focuses on research and treatment, and St. Jude has even helped improve the survival rate among kids with cancer. St. Jude relies heavily on individual contributions. That support means families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food.

2. American Red Cross

No one can predict a disaster, but the American Red Cross — and Red Cross organizations around the world — are already prepared. The organization’s mission is to support those affected by disaster by providing care, shelter and support from a strong community of volunteers. The Red Cross, which also organizes blood drives and life-saving training like CPR, prides itself on remaining neutral in conflict while helping to alleviate suffering.

3. World Central Kitchen

Founded by chef José Andrés and his wife Patricia, World Central Kitchen strives to “empower communities and strengthen economies” through food. The organization provides warm meals to communities in need, particularly in times of crisis. Whether it’s feeding people in Puerto Rico, Australia or Central America, World Central Kitchen offers emergency food relief as well as food safety and chef relief training.

4. Mental Health America

Founded in 1909, Mental Health America has spent more than a century prioritizing mental wellness. The community-based organization’s mission focuses on crisis prevention, early identification and intervention for people at risk. In addition to offering screenings for mental health and tools and tips to address various wellness challenges, Mental Health America also connects people to places that offer help.

5. charity: water

With roughly 785 million people around the world lacking basic drinking water service, according to the World Health Organization, nonprofit organizations such as charity: water have stepped in to create more access to one of life’s basic necessities. After all, without clean water, communities are more susceptible to illness. Not only that, but members of those communities often sacrifice other necessities such as education and work to search for a viable source of water. Since its 2006 launch, charity: water has funded more than 79,000 water projects in 29 countries. And because private donors fund the organization’s operating costs, 100% of individual donations go toward funding water projects.
