If you’re handy and want to make some extra cash doing home repair or improvement jobs, you’re in luck. There are quite a few options that’ll let you use your skills and experience to do just about anything you can think of, from cleaning out gutters to painting rooms or entire houses.

With many of these jobs, you’ll earn around $500 a day — if not more. The payout does depend on many factors, though, such as your expertise, the type and scale of the project, and the types of clients you find.

Depending on your preferences, you might want to charge by the hour or the project. That’s because some jobs pay more when based on a per-project rate as opposed to an hourly rate, and vice versa.

Ready to get started? Here are six ways to make at least $500 a day doing home repair jobs.

Clean Out Gutters

Average hourly pay: $23+

As a gutter cleaner, you’ll have to do a fair amount of physical labor, but that’s the case with almost any home repair job. With this particular task, you don’t generally need very specialized education, but some experience definitely helps. You’ll also need some tools to get the job done, like specialty rakes and cleaning wands to remove excess debris. You may also need a ladder.

While the average hourly pay for a gutter cleaner is $23, some people earn around $36.30 an hour. That said, you could make more than that by pricing your services based on the size of the home and any overhead costs you might incur.

According to Zippia, if you perform the service yourself, you could make $215 for a 4,000-5,000 square foot home. Assuming it takes you two to three hours to do this, you could handle a couple of houses a day for that $500 earning potential. And if you work in an area with higher-end clients or more expensive homes, you could charge a little more.

Painting Homes

Average hourly pay: $22

Painting is another area where you could make some good money, especially if you’re experienced, efficient, and good at what you do. There is a bit of overhead, since you’ll generally need to buy any equipment or tools yourself. You may also have to purchase the paint, though you can factor that into your overall rates.

Rates for painting houses vary widely. For example, if you charge an hourly rate, you could be looking at around $22 an hour. Or you could charge, say, $1.50 to $2.00 per square foot for potentially much higher profits.

If you want to make the most amount of money, however, you probably want to go with a per-project basis.

“Painting rooms is a great way to make extra money. I’ve seen people charge between $300 and $600 per room,” said Justin Godur, real estate expert, finance advisor and founder of Capital Max. “By painting just two rooms a day, you can easily hit your $500 goal. The key is to offer quality work quickly, maximizing your earnings.”

Install Tile

Average hourly pay: $24

If you’re experienced with installing tiles, either indoors or outdoors, you could potentially earn up to $500 a day or more. Just know that you’ll generally need to have the tools of the trade — like tile cutters and wet saws — beforehand. Once you have them, however, you’re looking at a potentially lucrative venture.

One way to increase your profits is to choose the type of installation projects carefully. For example, you could charge between $2,000 and $6,300 for installing ceramic tile, according to Forbes. Depending on the homeowner you’re doing the job for, you might need to purchase the tile yourself, so be aware of that.

Minor Plumbing Repairs

Average hourly pay: $30

According to ZipRecruiter, the average hourly pay for a plumbing technician is $30. The more complex the repair, the more you can charge.

“Small plumbing repairs like fixing leaky faucets or unclogging drains are high-paying and in demand,” said Godur. “I’ve come across jobs that pay anywhere from $150 to $300 each. With a bit of skill, you can handle two or three of these jobs daily, earning $500 or more.”

The good news is that you don’t generally need to be certified to handle minor repairs, like fixing a faucet. For more complex jobs, however, you may need proof or your qualifications.

Repair or Build Decks

Average hourly pay: $23

Repairing a deck can be quite the endeavor, especially if you’re dealing with a large project in need of extensive repairs. If you’re looking at this on an hourly payout, you can expect to earn around $23 an hour doing this task.

But you can make more by charging by the project. According to Forbes, homeowners will often spend anywhere from $700 to $3,100 on repairs. If the project requires more materials or labor, you could charge much more for your time and expertise.

As with anything else, expect to have some overhead. This could include materials, nails, wood stain, or other tools of the trade.

Carpentry Tasks

Average hourly pay: $40+

“Installing or repairing doors, shelves, or cabinets can be highly profitable,” said Godur. “These jobs often pay between $200 and $500 each. By completing just two of these jobs in a day, you can reach your goal comfortably. Carpentry skills are always needed, making this a reliable way to earn.”

The more experienced you are, the more you can charge. You can also set your rates based on the size of the project. For example, you could charge $40 to $100 an hour to replace the home’s cabinets, or $50 to $500 per linear foot.

Be sure to account for material and any other overhead costs that might affect your bottom line.
