Did you know that some of your favorite NHL players have moonlighted as actors on TV and in movies? Here are seven hockey superstars that tested the waters in Hollywood and made appearances on both the big and small screen.

Cam Neely in Dumb and Dumber

One of the most famous cameos in NHL history is the appearance of Boston Bruin Cam Neely in the 1994 movie Dumb and Dumber. He steals the scene as Seabass, an angry restaurant patron who gets into a scuffle with Harry, played by Jeff Daniels. The scene is memorable because Neely demonstrates his acting chops and shows he’s more than just a great hockey player — he can be quite funny, too.

The Mighty Ducks movies

Throughout The Mighty Ducks trilogy, several hockey players made cameos as themselves. Wayne Gretzky, Chris Chelios, Cam Neely, Mike Modano, Basil McRae, Luc Robitaille, and Paul Kariya took to the screen between 1992 and 1996. Kids and adults alike love these movies that are still favourites today.

Georges Laraque in Goon

Goon is a hockey movie that doesn’t get a lot of chatter. Based on the NHL career of Doug Glatt, played by Seann William Scott, hockey player Georges Laraque makes a cameo in this film. He exchanges a few polite words with Smith before they start brawling on the ice. It’s a funny scene that’s really memorable.

Marty McSorley in ConAir

In the Nicholas Cage flick ConAir, Marty McSorley trades the ice rink for a cockpit and has a small role as one of the co-pilots transporting criminals. Besides this role, McSorley has several other IMDB credits, playing both scripted roles and making cameos in movies and on TV.

The Philadelphia Flyers in This is 40

Marketed as a “sort-of sequel” to the movie Knocked Up, This is 40 has a scene where actresses Leslie Mann and Megan Fox are in a bar chatting with some hockey players. These players are actual Philadelphia Flyers (and actor Wyatt Rusell) playing themselves as flirty bar patrons. Matt Carle, Scott Hartnell, Ian Laperriere, and James Van Riemsdyk are all together, and Van Riemsdyk even tries to impress Fox by taking out his fake teeth for her.

Wayne Gretzky on Saturday Night Live

The Great One has made a few cameos throughout the years, including The Mighty Ducks, The Simpsons, and even The Young and the Restless. In 1989, Wayne Gretzky took over the stage at 30 Rock in New York City to host the penultimate episode of season 14 of Saturday Night Live. While he wasn’t the first athlete to host, he was the first hockey player to do so.

Brent Burns in Vikings

Brent Burns, a defenseman for the San Jose Sharks, was in two episodes of the hit series Vikings in late 2020 and early 2021. He played Skane, a character for which he had to sport a long beard and a braid and speak with a Scandinavian accent. He appeared in episodes 13 and 14 in season six. The series is still streaming on services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video if you want to check it out.
