Here are 7 stores to shop if you want to get the ‘old money aesthetic’ for less

If you’ve ever watched the shows Big Little Lies, Succession, Revenge or even Gossip Girl, you know that the uber-wealthy characters rarely wear flashy designer logos or show off major labels. Instead, they stick to pieces that are well-tailored, feature quality fabrics and often have a more neutral look. Last year, TikTok came up with a name for this timeless style: “old money aesthetic.”

The term “old money” refers to people who have inherited their wealth over several generations, like the Kennedys or even Princess Diana. As for the style, it consists of neutral colors, high-quality basics and often preppy, monochromatic and minimalist looks.

This style is also often called “quiet luxury.” One of the big names in the quiet luxury space is the brand Loro Piana, where a simple T-shirt costs around $425. However, some other brand examples may include Ralph Lauren, MaxMara, The Row or LOEWE.

That said, you don’t actually have to have “old money” to dress like it. In fact, maybe ironically, it’s actually pretty easy to duplicate the aesthetic on a budget. You can build a wardrobe with a few quality basics from any of these seven stores below.

1. Bloomingdale’s

Bloomingdale’s may seem like a cop-out, but it carries a range of brands with the “old money aesthetic” in mind. Shop from high-end brands like Burberry and Moncler and less expensive brands like Maje, Theory, Reiss and L’Agence. However, Bloomingdale’s Aqua brand generally also sells expensive-looking styles, from tweed blazers to classy maxi dresses, for less. Plus, it has its own more affordable cashmere line.

2. Club Monaco

Club Monaco is a Canadian-based casual low-end luxury brand specializing in clothing for Monday through Friday, aka workwear. However, it’s also a good spot to look for wool winter coats, knit hoodies and slip dresses for layering.

3. Everlane

Meghan Markle is seemingly a fan of Everlane, as she’s been spotted wearing it multiple times. The sustainable, ethical fashion brand specializes in quality basics. From denim to cashmere, you could build an entire capsule wardrobe with Everlane pieces.

4. H&M

It might seem a little ironic to have H&M on a list of stores selling “old money style,” but you really can create the look for less with a range of inexpensive basics. However, here’s a hot take: H&M is better online. It’s easier to sort through the brand’s styles, it offers great online exclusives, and you can check out its slightly elevated line, H&M Edition.

5. J.Crew

J.Crew is like the epitome of approachable, old money aesthetic. The brand’s head of women’s and kids’ design, Olympia Gayot, has a playful yet sophisticated style. (Fun fact: Her mom was one of the founding designers of Club Monaco). J.Crew is your spot if you love colorful cashmeres, wide-leg pants, lady jackets and pearls. Even if you prefer to stray from the standard black, white and beige palettes, J.Crew even gives its neutrals some extra flair.

6. Reformation

If you haven’t heard of Reformation, you’ve probably seen celebrities like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Hailey Bieber in one of its dresses. The brand prides itself on being certified climate-neutral and is known in the fashion world for its pretty wedding guest-appropriate dresses, embroidered denim and often fitted yet feminine fits. Not all of it may fall under the old money aesthetic, but there are definitely some great options.

7. Quince

Quince was founded by those who formerly worked for high-end brands but found that investing in luxury goods themselves was rare due to the high price tags. Now, Quince sells luxury-quality items at more affordable price points by using a factory-direct model, cutting out the supply-chain middlemen. You can find everything from quality cashmere, leather and fine jewelry to T-shirts and pajamas for less.
