10 best kids’ snow boots they’ll need for winter adventures

Waterproofing, warmth and traction make for great snow boots (The Independent/ iStock)

When it comes to snow boots, they need to be warm, dry and give good grip on the snow and ice.

They are also worth considering as an alternative to wellies if your child is likely to be playing outside a lot over winter, as they often have considerably better insulation.

Of the boots featured here, they’re all snowproof but it’d be a stretch to call the JoJo Maman Bébé boots waterproof.

This doesn’t mean they’re a bad idea – they’re very much designed for toddlers to play in the snow, rather than splash in puddles. The rest are waterproof, and they are all snug and protective against the cold.

Depending on the age of your child and where you’re going to be using them, it’s worth considering how easy they are to take on and off – some simply pull on, others have elasticated laces.

The Reima boots deserve a special mention – of all the boots we tested, these were the most versatile (but also the most expensive).

We’ve tested these on muddy soggy walks in the coldest recent temperatures, so not below freezing, but still chilly enough to be grateful for cosy boots.

Vivo Barefoot X Dinoski panda themed snow boots

An incredibly warm and waterproof pair of boots, their innovative design means they keep little feet very snug and dry without any of the bulk found on some of the others here. They have a removable thermal insole (great for airing after a long day) and are made with a recycled RPET felt lining, so they’re highly breathable and work well to regulate the temperature.

With a simple toggle to close the top, and a wide Velcro strap to secure, they’re really easy to pull on and off thanks to the wide fit. Available from UK size 8 to 13.

Columbia rope tow III waterproof boot

A brilliant pair of boots that combines oodles of warmth and protection from the wet in a really lightweight package – there’s no chance of little legs feeling weighed down in these. The rubber soles are satisfyingly chunky and wrap up the sides and over the toes to give loads of support.

Laced up with an easy-pull bungee system they’re neat to adjust while feeling nice and secure around the ankle. They’re rated down to -32C and have a waterproof PU coated leather and synthetic nylon upper. Available in UK sizes 7 (jr) to 6 (adult) and in this blue/grey mix or black.

JoJo Maman Bébé children’s cosy snow boots

These dinky boots from JoJo have long been a hit with toddlers – and for the price, you can’t go wrong. They’re wonderfully warm and cosy, and the simple Velcro flap on the side means they’re faff-free for taking on and off.

The sole is varied with plenty of grip for the snow, but it’s worth noting – don’t mistake these for wellies. They’re great at keeping out the snow, but make sure your little one stays out of big puddles in them. They’re cheap, cheerful and effective. Available in navy or pink, and from UK size 3 to 12.

Muddy Puddles snowdrift snow boots

Made from vegan suede, these waterproof boots are a stylish take on the classic adult style and have all you need to keep your child’s feet warm and toasty. The felt inner can be removed and the soles are grippy without being overly clumpy. The elasticated draw cord closure is easy to use, but would be better if it could open further.

Our little tester liked the sheepskin cuff and was comfy all day in these – the lining has extra padding in the sole. Available in tan or blue, and from UK size 6 (jr) to 4 (adult).

Jack Wolfskin Woodland Texapore WT mid VC K

A deceptively technical boot, these Jack Wolfskin boots are some of the most waterproof here, designed to be worn in both rain and snow. Lightweight and flexible, they’re fleece-lined for warmth and have a pull cord around the top to prevent snow getting in.

The sole is particularly grippy – especially on the mud and wet leaves we came across in the park. There’s also a Velcro strap to improve the fit, but we found it didn’t make a difference to the fit. Available in purple or turquoise, and from EU size 26 to 40.

Reima kids’ winter boots Laplander

These boots are bursting with tech, yet despite their brilliant winter weather credentials, they’re styled to look at home on the street as they are on the snow – which helps justify their price tag. Designed to be warm in temperatures down to -20C, and fully waterproof, they feature Vibram arctic grip sections on the soles for incredible grip on ice.

The elastic lacing is easy to tighten, and they have a fluorocarbon-free water and dirt repellent finish. Available in black, pink, navy and stone, and from EU size 28 to 38.

Quechua kids’ warm and waterproof snow hiking boots

Of all the boots featured here, these are the closest to a standard pair of walking boots, so offer that versatility, but have added winter features such as extra deep studded soles for walking on snow, fully waterproof membrane, and an insulated sole.

Nice and high, they offer lots of support and are the only pair here to be fastened with standard laces. A great option for older kids, they’re really comfortable for long walks. Available in this blue and turquoise, or black and red, and from EU size 30 to 38.

Keen younger kids’ Redwood winter waterproof boots

An investment pair of boots, these offer fantastic insulation against the cold, down to temperatures of -32C, and have a waterproof, breathable membrane. Smart and serious in the snow, the high cuff, good ankle support and cushioned, quick-dry inner sole mean they’re great for wearing all day, and special mention should be given to the Velcro straps – they’re easy to use with gloves on, and provide a really secure fit.

The waterproof nubuck leather finishes them off nicely. Available in pale blue, brown black and red, and grey and bright blue, and from UK size 7 to 12 (jr).

Kavat Voxna kids’ winter boots

A more serious alternative to the JoJo boots, these fully waterproof snow boots will stand up to the worst of the weather. Simply pulled on by the hook at the back, they’re straightforward and really good at their job.

Padded and lined with fleece, they’re more than warm enough. The rubber sole is chunky and grippy without dominating the boot, meaning they’re not too heavy to weigh little legs down. Available in black, navy, dark meadow print and plum, and from EU size 22 to 30.

Kuling leopard Isaberg winter boots

Simple but effective, these winter boots from Swedish brand Kuling are a great price for the warmth and waterproofing they offer. Straightforward to pull on, the top can be gathered by the toggle, and they’re lined with a cosy, insulating synthetic pile. The outer is coated with fluorocarbon-free water and dirt-repellent Bionic-Finish Eco, so mud and marks easily brush off.

They’re available in a range of patterns, including this leopard print, and woody rose, lilac flowers, brown dots, black, deep green, mustard, white cherry print and off petrol, and from EU size 25 to 36.
