If you’ve ever watched the shows Billions, Succession or Gossip Girl, you know that the wealthy characters are rarely seen wearing designer logos and major labels. TikTok recently came up with a name for this neutral, yet classic style: “Old money aesthetic.”
According to Glamour UK, the term “old money” refers to people who have inherited their wealth over several generations — think of Princess Diana or the Kennedys. As for the style, it consists of neutral colors, high-quality basics and often preppy, monochromatic and minimalist looks. The quality of the clothes matters more than the label as well. Some people think this style is classic, elegant and sophisticated. However, others think it’s too basic, boring or even a little frumpy.
The old money style is also often called “quiet luxury.” One of the big names in the quiet luxury space is the brand Loro Piana, where a simple T-shirt costs around $425. However, some other brand examples include Ralph Lauren, MaxMara or The Row, just to give you a better idea.
That said, the term is obviously classist and exclusionary. But if you like the old money aesthetic, ironically, it’s actually pretty easy to duplicate on a budget. You can build a wardrobe with a few quality basics, including a great blazer, well-tailored pants, simple loafers and a coat you can wear with all of the above.

You can dress this lightweight polo sweater up with trousers or down with jeans. This camel color is a classic you can wear from season to season, year after year. However, it also comes in dark green, light purple and “bronze” red colors.
