A Cubs fan in need of a kidney found help from an unlikely source ... a White Sox fan

A crosstown rivalry doesn’t mean much when another person’s health is on the line. One Chicago Cubs fan in need of a kidney found that out when a Chicago White Sox fan stepped up in a big way.

Bridgett Kolls attended a Cubs game in May of 2019 with a sign that read, “This Lil’ Cubbie needs a kidney.” Below that message was a number for fans to contact Kolls if they were interested in getting tested.

Kolls contacted the Cubs before the game, and the team decided to put her sign on the scoreboard and share her message on social media.

At some point in the process, Kolls was contacted by Thomas Alessio, a lifelong White Sox fan. Alessio passed initial tests, and Kolls grew excited that she finally found a match. Alessio made it through the final steps of the process, and was officially approved as a match for Kolls.

The two were initially scheduled to undergo the transplant in March, though the procedure got moved to July as a result of COVID-19. Alessio and Kolls spoke about the procedure over video chat three months later, where Alessio said 2020 has been a difficult year for him personally, but he would do it all again so he could help Kolls.

Despite Alessio’s friendship with Kolls, Alessio said there was no way he was going to root for the Cubs now.

Alessio and Kolls can celebrate at a Cubs game next year

While Alessio isn’t going to change his fandom, he may have to fake it for one day. Cubs outfielder Ian Happ contacted Kolls to invite her to celebrate at a Cubs game next season. That would be a fitting end for Kolls’ story. She found her match because she attended a game. She might as well celebrate at the place where everything started.
