Special prayers will take place for 48 days. Maha Yagam is also held during which people will not be allowed to visit the temple to offer prayers. The consecration ceremony took place conducted on Tuesday, and 'pooja' has started from Wednesday.

Sivalingeswarar, the man in charge of the Adhinam, said that it has been a practice to create deities to protect people from plagues and diseases. In Tamil Nadu, there are several such deities such as the Plague Mariamman Temple in Coimbatore. People harbour this belief that deities protected the citizens during the plague and cholera outbreak in the past.
