Adam Sandler comedy 'Hubie Halloween' is the most-streamed Netflix movie of 2020 in the US

Adam Sandler's all encompassing popularity on Netflix shows no signs whatsoever of abating, with news that his latest movie is the most-streamed of 2020 in the US.

Seasonal horror-comedy Hubie Halloween, despite a swathe of shrug-worthy reviews, even achieved the accolade in under a month, the window of streaming data running from April 2020 to October 2020.

The movie only debuted on 7 October.

According to Variety, and from data provided by analytics firm Flixpatrol, Hubie falls behind just one other title - Polish erotic drama 365 Days in the overall popularity rankings, but that movie debuted on the platform back in June.

The movie finds Sandler as Hubie, a deli worker ridiculed in his hometown of Salem, who acts as the city's official Halloween monitor.

Penned by Sandler with his long-time collaborator Tim Herlihy, it also stars Maya Rudolph, Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Steve Buscemi, Ray Liotta and Kenan Thompson.

But despite a solid cast, it received middling reviews, ranging from 'unexpectedly bearable' to 'mildly offensive'.

This is far from the first smash that Sandler has delivered for the streamer, after extending his deal with Netflix in January to 10 movies in all.

His movie Murder Mystery with Jennifer Aniston ended up the fifth most-watched title on Netflix in 2019, streamed by 73 million accounts, despite even more apathetic reviews.

He's also released the movies The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over, Sandy Wexler and The Week Of, all in pretty quick succession.

And though it's clear that the confounding star has vast appeal among Netflix users worldwide, as well as occasional universal appeal among critics too.

Recent roles in both Noah Baumbach's The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) and the Safdie brothers' breathless Uncut Gems, both released on Netflix, received rave reviews.
