Add some style to your gym routine with this menswear workout clothing guide

When it comes to workout clothes, it can be hard to find garments that have a balance of substance and style. Some athletic wear forgos fashion in the name of functionality, while other fitness gear is all aesthetic with none of the comfort. But it is possible to have the best of both worlds!

In this episode of In The Know’s The Guide, host Jovel Roystan talks to stylist and model Kadeem Johnson (@kjohn_lasoul) about how to keep your workout style on point in this menswear fitness clothing guide.

“First thing to think about is fit,” says Roystan. “Some guys like things a little bit oversized and loose,” he explains as he pulls out an ASOS long sleeve t-shirt. “Other guys maybe like very minimal fabric,” he says, holding an ASOS stringer vest.

Roystan also notes that it’s important to think about fabric when it comes to workout gear. “You want items that have a little bit of stretch that’ll keep you comfortable and that are breathable throughout the workout,” he explains.

Beyond fabric, Roystan insists on indulging in colors and prints. He shows off a green Lululemon short sleeve tee and printed ASOS training shorts.

Not sure what to pair with the all-over-print shorts? Roystan thinks this ASOS oil wash tee will do the trick!

Johnson is also a big fan of the mix and match approach. “I don’t usually do a set,” the stylist explains. “I’ll wear a gray shirt with like, black shorts. It still makes sense, but I do mix the colors.”

It’s also important to think about layering when it comes to workout clothing, especially if you plan on going out straight from the gym. Roystan throws on this ASOS muscle training track jacket as a way to transition from the gym to a restaurant.

Now for what to carry all your gym gear in. When it comes to gym essentials like a duffel bag, towel, and water bottle, “An easy way to keep things looking good is to have a cohesive color palette,” explains Roystan.

Roystan leans toward this Nike Brasilia duffel bag in black, but suggests to “do your thing” when it comes to your color preference.

Of course, sneakers are maybe the most important part of any gym fit. “You’ve gotta have the right style based on whatever you’re going to be doing because it can be the difference between an effective workout and a potential injury,” Roystan explains.

For instance if you’re a runner, you’ll want a shoe with more cushion. Roystan goes with the Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit for his pair of choice.

No matter your style, the most important thing when it comes to workout clothing is to make sure you feel comfortable and safe in what you’re wearing.
