Should You Be Adding Brambles (ASX:BXB) To Your Watchlist Today?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Brambles (ASX:BXB). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Fast Is Brambles Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

Even modest earnings per share growth (EPS) can create meaningful value, when it is sustained reliably from year to year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. It's good to see that Brambles's EPS have grown from US$0.33 to US$0.37 over twelve months. I doubt many would complain about that 14% gain.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). I note that Brambles's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Brambles maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 11% to US$5.4b. That's progress.

Are Brambles Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like the kids in the streets standing up for their beliefs, insider share purchases give me reason to believe in a brighter future. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

It's good to see Brambles insiders walking the walk, by spending US$615k on shares in just twelve months. When you contrast that with the complete lack of sales, it's easy for shareholders to brim with joyful expectancy. It is also worth noting that it was Independent Non-Executive Chairman John Mullen who made the biggest single purchase, worth AU$348k, paying AU$11.08 per share.

Should You Add Brambles To Your Watchlist?

One positive for Brambles is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. While some companies are struggling to grow EPS, Brambles seems free from that morose affliction. The cherry on top is the insider share purchases, which provide an extra impetus to keep and eye on this stock, at the very least. Even so, be aware that Brambles is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , you should know about...
