Should You Be Adding Veritiv (NYSE:VRTV) To Your Watchlist Today?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Veritiv (NYSE:VRTV). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

Veritiv's Improving Profits

In business, though not in life, profits are a key measure of success; and share prices tend to reflect earnings per share (EPS). So like a ray of sunshine through a gap in the clouds, improving EPS is considered a good sign. It is therefore awe-striking that Veritiv's EPS went from US$0.35 to US$8.20 in just one year. When you see earnings grow that quickly, it often means good things ahead for the company.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. It seems Veritiv is pretty stable, since revenue and EBIT margins are pretty flat year on year. That's not bad, but it doesn't point to ongoing future growth, either.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Veritiv's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.

Are Veritiv Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like that fresh smell in the air when the rains are coming, insider buying fills me with optimistic anticipation. Because oftentimes, the purchase of stock is a sign that the buyer views it as undervalued. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

The first bit of good news is that no Veritiv insiders reported share sales in the last twelve months. But the really good news is that Independent Chairman Stephen Macadam F. spent US$387k buying stock stock, at an average price of around US$59.60. Big buys like that give me a sense of opportunity; actions speak louder than words.

The good news, alongside the insider buying, for Veritiv bulls is that insiders (collectively) have a meaningful investment in the stock. With a whopping US$81m worth of shares as a group, insiders have plenty riding on the company's success. That's certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.

Does Veritiv Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Veritiv's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. The incing on the cake is that insiders own a large chunk of the company and one has even been buying more shares. This quick rundown suggests that the business may be of good quality, and also at an inflection point, so maybe Veritiv deserves timely attention. Don't forget that there may still be risks.
